Packing for a quick trip over a three-day weekend to Alcohuáz in the Norte Chico. It’s been too long since I’ve been under the spectacular night skies of the region.

I spent part of a weekend earlier this month scanning some old negatives from my first time in Chile. That was over the summer (winter here) of 1987, between my junior and senior years of high school, when I came here at the tail end of the Pinochet dictatorship. I took these black and white photos during a ceremony in Rancagua of soldiers swearing loyalty to the Chilean flag on the day commemorating the Combate de la Concepción during the War of the Pacific. July 9, 1987.
